Steps In the Lifestyle Nutrition Management Approach
Step 1: Assessment
An assessment of your current and optimal weight, your eating habits,
your current nutrition, calorie usage, and the effect of any medical
conditions you may have. The assessment includes developing an understanding
of your family circumstances, the social aspects of food in your
life, and what foods you most and least enjoy.
Step 2: Lifestyle Modification Plan
A comprehensive plan is developed to modify your lifestyle to achieve
weight loss. High-calorie/low-nutritional-quality foods are reduced
and replaced by lower calorie, nutrient-dense foods. Calorie utilization
is increased through lifestyle modification and exercise programs.
Step 3: Optional Home Intervention
If necessary, we can come to you home and explain your program
to your family. We review the food in the house and suggest what
should be removed, and what should be added. We can suggest menus
designed to be workable for your lifestyle, and to please all the
people with whom you eat. If cooking skills are a limitation to
making the dietary transition, we can provide cooking instruction.
Step 4: Monitoring
Through periodic office visits or phone consultation we review
with you what lifestyle changes are working for you and which are
proving to be more difficult than expected. Based on this feedback
we adjust the lifestyle modification plan to be more effective.
Step 5: Maintenance
When you achieve your weight-reduction goals we review with you
the long-term lifestyle management issues you will face. With lifestyle
nutrition management, there is no return to a "before the diet"
state. Instead, your lifestyle is permanently modified. During the
weight-loss period you will have been consuming the calories and
expending the energy that you should be doing at your desired weight.
Once you are at that point, you are in balance.
